Margaret Caruthers

Margaret Caruthers was one of the five children born to Malinda and Henry Caruthers.  Squire Columbus Porter, who settled near the Lawrence family, later married Margaret.  To this union were born Laura, Henry, William and S.C. Jr.  After the death of Squire, Margaret married Charlie Ross.  To this union were born Oscar, Boss, U.S.,  Albert, Maggie, and Arthur.
Joe Lawrence worked as Overseer of the Caruthers family as slaves for the McCandless family.  Joe came to Texas from Rutherford County, Tennessee in 1843 at the age of 18. Joe returned to Tennessee in 1847 and brought back with him to Texas the Henry Caruthers family. Mary Minerva McCandless (sister to Macca Orange McCandless) and husband Bill Walker were first to move to the McCandless land in about 1854, choosing the western side.

Joseph and Macca moved to their portion of the McCandless land in Navarro County in 1856.

Henry Caruthers and his family (Malinda, sons Calvin and Jeffery) remained with the Lawrence family helping them to improve the farm.  Later, while in Texas, Henry Caruthers and Malinda had more children:  they are George, John, Margaret, Henry and William.

Since Mary and Macca are all sharing the McCandless land, it is assumed that the Caruthers worked for both families. Later (year unknown) Mary McCandless deeded a portion of her land to
